Common Dental Problems Seen in Childhood

Cavities are as common in children as they are in adults. Some children love to eat sweets and sugary drinks, especially the fizzy ones. These foods usually leave deposits in the teeth and if they are not removed, cleaned regularly they react with the dental enamel and create cavities and dental erosion.

Lack of proper hygiene causes bad breath or halitosis in children. Besides this, gum diseases and digestive problems are also are known to cause bad breath. If your child suffers from bad breath it is a good idea to bring them in for a dental visit.

This is a very common problem seen among children. Many children grind their teeth while sleeping. It is a common developmental problem and must be addressed at the earliest because it can otherwise lead to dental wear and muscular pain.

Poor oral hygiene is the most common reason for gum disease. Plaque formation due to lack of oral hygiene can cause inflammation of the gums, called gingivitis.

Children can also experience other dental problems like overcrowded or misaligned teeth. Childhood is the right time to treat orthodontic issues to give your child a perfect smile and a healthy set of teeth.

Our dental clinic provides services in all the above categories. We take care in providing a friendly and comfortable atmosphere for children.

Significance of Dental Care in Children

You may be surprised to know that caring for children’s dental health and hygiene begins even before they start teething. You should ideally schedule a dental visit for your child at around 6 months of age to get a good start to oral health.

This helps them become familiar with the sights and the smells at the dentist. By tailoring dental care to each stage of your child’s growth, you can help them develop healthy habits and maintain strong, healthy teeth for life.

Start caring for your child’s teeth even before their first tooth comes through. Keeping their gums clean is essential, and a gentle wipe with a soft cloth after feeding can help remove food debris and keep their gums healthy. Infants are also at risk of baby bottle tooth decay, so it’s important to wean them off bottles at night by offering water instead of fruit juices or milk. Never leave a bottle in your baby’s mouth as they fall asleep, as this can contribute to early tooth decay.

As your child’s teeth start coming in, it’s time to introduce brushing. Use a small toothbrush with soft bristles and a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste to gently clean their teeth. At this stage, their diet plays a big role in dental development, so include a variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables, to support healthy growth. Be mindful of their snacking habits and avoid allowing them to sip on sugary drinks throughout the day, as this can increase the risk of cavities.

By this age, it’s important to establish consistent brushing habits. Help your child brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and start teaching them to floss as soon as their teeth touch. Encourage healthy eating habits by limiting all-day grazing and ensuring sugary treats are consumed in one sitting rather than spread throughout the day. After enjoying sweets, rinsing with water or brushing thoroughly helps minimise the impact on their teeth.

As your child grows older, they should start brushing and flossing independently, but supervision is still important to make sure they are doing it properly. Reinforce the habit of brushing twice a day and teach them to spit out toothpaste but not rinse afterwards, so the fluoride can continue protecting their teeth. Encourage them to avoid excessive sugary snacks and drinks, and remind them to rinse with water or brush their teeth after enjoying any sweet treats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Paediatric dentistry is dedicated to caring for children’s oral health, from their first tooth through to their teenage years. It addresses the specific dental needs of growing children, offering both preventive care and treatments to support healthy, happy smiles.

Paediatric dentistry focuses exclusively on children’s oral health, offering specialised care tailored to their developmental stages and unique needs. Unlike general dentistry, paediatric dentists have additional training in treating children, including those with special health care requirements, and their practices are designed to create a welcoming, child-friendly environment.

According to the Australian Dental Association, children should visit a dentist when their first tooth appears or by their first birthday. Early dental visits help prevent potential issues and provide parents with guidance on maintaining their child’s oral health. (Source: Australian Dental Association)

Children should visit the dentist every six months to keep their teeth healthy and to address any potential issues early. Regular check-ups also help build good oral care habits for life.

You can help your child feel comfortable about visiting the dentist by having positive conversations, reading children’s books about dental check-ups, or practising with role-playing at home. Presenting the visit as an important and healthy routine can make the experience enjoyable and stress-free.

You can prevent cavities by encouraging your child to brush with fluoride toothpaste twice a day, floss regularly, and limit sugary snacks and drinks. Regular dental check-ups and teaching good oral hygiene habits early on are essential for keeping their teeth healthy.

If your child experiences a dental emergency, like a knocked-out tooth or severe toothache, contact our team straight away. Our paediatric dentists can provide guidance on what to do immediately and arrange urgent care to address the issue.

Encourage your child to brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day, floss daily, and enjoy a balanced diet while limiting sugary snacks and drinks. These habits are key to keeping their teeth healthy.

Very friendly staff and I found that the lady dental nurse I had was very thorough and gentle when I had to go in for a filling when I broke one of my back teeth while in hospital at Epworth Camberwell just down the road from this clinic, she also advised me to have a check up again soon which I plan on but she made me very comfortable at a time I was not looking forward to and I have never been here before I would have no hesitation in recommending this dentist to anyone wondering if they should visit here!
